OFAC Expands Scope of Medical, Agriculture-Related Items Authorized for Export to Iran

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced that on December 23, 2016 it will publish an amendment to the Iranian Transactions and Sanctions Regulations (ITSR) to expand the scope of medical devices and agricultural commodities generally authorized for export or reexport to Iran without specific authorization. The amendment includes new or expanded authorizations related to (1) training, (2) replacement parts, (3) software and services for the operation, maintenance, and repair of medical devices, and (4) items that are broken, defective, or non-operational, or connected to product recalls, adverse events, or other safety concerns. The amendment also revises the definition of the terms “goods of Iranian origin” and “Iranian-origin goods.” Lastly, OFAC published a number of new and updated FAQs pertaining to the amendment.
